Gothenburg, on Sweden’s west coast, is undergoing transformational change over the 30 years with major investment in infrastructure, urban design and development to reshape the city and accommodate regional growth. A large part of the change is associated with the evolution of industry around the Port of Gothenburg towards hi-tech and business sectors.
The West Link project is one of Sweden’s largest and most complex rail projects. The project will increase capacity, reduce journey times, improve connectivity and facilitate transport-orientated regeneration across one of Sweden’s largest cities. The new transport infrastructure will provide a direct connection for 130,000 commuters between central Gothenburg and the city’s main commercial business district.
The West Link comprises three new stations and eight kilometres of double track railway, with six kilometres in tunnel underneath the centre of Gothenburg.
Tyréns provided multidisciplinary consultancy services (structural, MEP, rail, cost management, architecture, utilities, transport consultancy, program management, environmental) from concept through to detail design for the new underground Central Station. A key driver for the project has been to reconnect the City Centre with the wider CBD in Gothenburg through removal of physical barriers and constraints. Improved connectivity and accessibility for all is core to the project and has underpinned our design approach.
A further part of Gothenburg’s regeneration is the redesign of the E45 trunk road, the main north-south route on the west Coast. In order to connect the CBD with the wider Port area, including across the river Göta älv, the main road is proposed to be placed inside a new tunnel. This will maximise the space for urban planning, landscape and development whilst reducing severance and urban blight. Tyréns provided a full range of services include road and construction engineering, geotechnics, hydrology, acoustics, lighting, landscape and construction phasing. Our involvement commenced at the concept stage through preparation of initial studies, and has continued to our current inputs to detailed design and construction drawings in advance of tender award.
Our overall input into Gotherburg’s regeneration is extensive and covers a broad range of projects and interventions. We have been instrumental in setting the regional masterplan and in securing investment funding for projects.
